Devil’s Advocate: Mentality of the Christian God
Lets say for the sake of argument that Christian dogma is correct.
I pose the question: What does the existence of Satan and other biblical actions say about the character of the Christian god?
First off, lets take this at face value. God decided that he needed to test humanity, the creatures that he created with free will, to make sure that we’ll still love him no matter what. How did he decide to preform this test? He decided to cause angels to rebel against him. Lucifer was just a pawn in this considering he was being controlled by God so he could eventually become the being the Christians call “Satan”. A pawn used, likely against his will, to use his powers to torture humanity with the permission of God.
The way I see it I think about Slugworth from “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” – Although Slugworth acts all evil, tempts “pure souls” to sin, and offers rewards for said sin… We then find out later that Slugworth is actually working for the boss. Tempting the pure beings to sin just to see how much they “Love” the boss. (The Boss, I might add, had their equivalent to Heaven in that candy room, but I digress)
So according to Christian dogma God is feeling like he needs to feed his internal ego maniac. He wants to know how awesome he is… AGAIN. He’s going to do everything in his power to do it too. So he calls forth his lap dog “Satan” to stir up some trouble. He commands Satan to use his demonic forces (that God awarded to him for being a good little pawn) and maybe even his own intervention to hurt one of his strongest believes in unspeakable ways. Why? So his ego can be stroked by praise, offerings, and thanks… even after God Himself used his powers to personally mess his life up, kill and destroy everything he loves or holds dear.
God: “I’m so Awesome I can mess your shit up and you’ll still praise me! ..or else”
It’s the “…or else” portion that really gets to a lot of people. Don’t praise God enough? You get eternally tortured. Praise god too much? Get tested and your life gets burned down to the ground. Then if you don’t keep up the same level of praise? You get eternally tortured. You don’t give a good portion of what you own away to the poor (sound like communism to anyone else?)? You get eternally tortured. Don’t read your required propaganda? (South Korea anyone?) You get eternally tortured. Don’t do what you’re told by your spiritual leader (like getting molested, raped, and any other of things that can be justified with biblical loop holes?)? You get eternally tortured. Do good for the sake of doing good (not in the name of God)? First off, It does not count toward your rewards in Heaven even to the point of damnation in hell if it keeps up!
To add insult to injury, Satan is the ultimate scape goat! Not only for God but for us humans as well. We do something wrong, steal, hurt others we then can blame it on being tempted by Satan. Even if metaphysically it wasn’t Satan who did it (though we can argue that Satan does nothing since EVERYTHING done is requested by God). If they say they asked God for forgiveness and you DON’T truly forgive that person not matter what the personal sin against you… well that’s a ticket to hell. That’s why all of those molesting priests have cushy jobs in the Vatican. They asked for forgiveness from God allegedly. The Christian Pope thinks that’s good enough punishment and refuses to let anyone else punish them. Giving them sanctuary in the Vatican,no less! So the Satan scapegoat can and IS used against Christians. Particularly gullible ones like kids are very susceptible. (“God forgave me for hurting your ass. He even says that it’s cool” Then he makes up bible verse or shows a boy-rape loophole to the kid.) According to the Pope, if the parents don’t forgive the Priests for ass raping their little boy then they can be excommunicated. Though they’re usually given a ton of money not to bring it up. God allows all of this!
With those few examples and even ignoring a great portion of the New Testament (since that’s the most heavily edited piece of literature that exists today. Think Wikipedia but only editable by corrupt kings, Popes, priests, and others that are looking for profit.) lets look at the psychological profile. We’re allegedly made in His image so out brains might be as well. I answered the questions as the God of Abraham, Issac, Father of Jesus would have. I even gave the benefit of the doubt in every case:

Although many Christians do believe in the type of deity you describe, I would have to mention that there are a significant number of Christians (and Jews) who do not worship such a divinity. If you read the Christian mystics you will find G-d portrayed in a very different way; in their view, G-d is not like a person, not like a thing, and completely beyond the finite imaginations of human beings. One of my teachers in college, who is a Hegelian Catholic, for example, spoke of the divine as the “Totally Other”.
Also, I’m pretty convinced that the original Christians were gnostics and that the parables of Jesus most definitely had occult meanings that were only revealed to some members of his circle. Gnostics definitely have a different view of deity, for instance the jealous divinity revealed in the Old Testament is not the true G-d, but rather the demiurge.
This leads to me an interesting idea–Christ could be seen as a discordian figure, overturning the Law with a message of radical Love and individual freedom before the divine. Love in this case is a disruptive force, tearing apart the “natural” bonds of family, class, and social obligations. Although the orthodox church managed to purge Christianity of most of its radical elements, I’m convinced that it is still possible to experience Christianity from a totally different point of view. The Gospel, in context, is for me not so different from the apple thrown by Eris…
P.S. “Holy Ghost Power” is a very effective magickal tool.

you have a nasty habit of blaming the “free will ” actions of man, on God, Perhaps you would confide in me how God has hurt you , and perhaps how your fellow man has too?

Jewish theology says that, indeed, the devil is an angel of G-d (not a “fallen” angel), who was created by G-d to tempt mankind. However, there is no eternal damnation in Judaism, and the purpose of the temptation is to allow the soul to be purified, so that it can receive more of G-d’s infinite light.
Furthermore, many sources view angels more as forces than anthropomorphic beings. So to say that humans are tempted by the devil, is really saying that within human nature, there is a capacity to do evil, along with good, and that we as human are constantly making choices on how we wish to behave. Therefore, blaming the devil is not an acceptable answer as to why a human performs an evil action, the devil only represents the POSSIBILITY to perform evil, not a force that compels one to do evil,
As to why evil exists at all, the answer is that without evil, we would be so awed by G-d’s goodness that we would love the creator as helpless automatons. Instead, we have the ability to love G-d freely, or not. The world is structured in such a way that if we don’t, our life choices are likely to result in negative life consequences, whereas if we do, we are able to receive more of the Infinite Light and Love, which means. This is known as karma; and, I should note, that it is said that our good deeds weigh 1000 times greater than the evil that we do.
Of course, having good karma doesn’t mean we won’t still experience hardships while in human form. Also, the task of those who are spiritually advanced includes “repairing the world”. It is OUR responsibility as humans to reduce the amount of evil in the world and collaborate with G-d to finish the task of perfecting creation. This is one way that humans are “made in G-d’s image”.
Remember, “G-d is not like a person, not like a thing.” In Kabbalah, the term for this aspect of G-d is Ayn Sof, which means “Without End.” Often it is referred to as the “Infinite No-Thingness.” To speak of G-d as if the divine is some little person or old man in the sky is actually completely pagan and foreign to monotheism*. Nor can you speak of G-d having some type of “personality”. It is only our projection and the tendency towards anthropomorphism within our brains
*Note: I consider Catholicism to be pagan through and through, and I’m not in any way defending their horribly twisted theology, not to mention the hundreds of years of evil doing they have promulgated. While I do know some very kind-hearted, intelligent, and ethical Catholics, but I can’t understand for the life of me how they can participate in the church.
